Stainless steel ropes are high tensile cables made from strands of stainless wire twisted together and heat annealed for added performance. For most balustrading applications, 3.2mm cables provide the best combination of strength, stretch, resistance to deflection, visual appearance and value for money.
Cable construction refers to the number and lay of individual wires within the cable. 1x19 offers the lowest stretch over long distances. It has smooth outer strand and a clean appearance. 7x7 is a more flexible cable with a textured or braided appearance. It is superior for applications with multiple changes of cable direction such as where hand swaging is used. Grade 316 is the most widely used stainless steel grade for balustrade cables. It offers corrosion resistance and strength to deliver good appearance and structural performance over time.
Because cables deflect, cable spacing has a direct impact on the ability of infill cables to restrict the passage of minimum sized objects through the balustrade/railing as required by local authorities and the Building Code of Australia. Typically, spacings of 80mm are used, however we recommend you confirm this with your local Council.

1x19 premium quality AISI 316 (marine grade) stainless steel wire rope. Made with diamond coated dies and heat annealed, this cable is extra bright, has a smooth finish, high tensile strength, limited flexibility and stretch, and resists tea staining. It is most commonly used with hydraulically swaged balustrade fittings, standard rigging and mast stays. BCA regulations permit wider spacing between balustrade wires if 1x19 construction wire rope is used. Not recommended for thimble and ferrule type swages.

It is suited for external balustrading and general rigging applications and is the most common wire rope used for DIY balustrading. The flexibility of 7x7 wire rope allows it to wrap around thimbles and be inserted into ferrules easily.
